In his Symphony No. 4, which he himself named the «Romantic», Anton Bruckner invites us to share in a sonorous natural mysticism, ranging from the elementary call in fifths of the horns at the start to the stylised birdcalls, chorales, funeral marches, and blaring hunting sounds, to the eerie encounter with dark, nocturnal visions of Romanticism. In the symphonic wolves' canyon of the finale, the light of a new day finally triumphs. Sir Simon Rattle continues the Bruckner tradition as Chief Conductor of the celebrated Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. His inaugural concert with the Berliner Philharmoniker already included works by British composer Thomas Adès, one of the most outstanding composers of our time.
